{"id":35,"date":"2013-06-10T22:27:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-10T22:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valeriechang.net\/blog\/?p=35"},"modified":"2013-06-10T22:34:57","modified_gmt":"2013-06-10T22:34:57","slug":"hello-from-valerie-dubrovnik-and-split","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/valeriechang.net\/blog\/?p=35","title":{"rendered":"Hello from Valerie: Dubrovnik and Split"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hopefully you&#8217;ve seen or can see Bryon&#8217;s posts here now. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been recovering from jet lag and general exhaustion so I apologize for the lack of posts so far.<\/p>\n<p>After a marathon 2 day research\/booking session I booked our flight out from SFO to Dubrovnik on 5\/6 for a flight on the very next day, 5\/7! \u00a0I also managed to book 50% of our hotels as well as all of our other flights. \u00a0I was pretty pleased with myself.<\/p>\n<p>But maybe I really shouldn&#8217;t have been so pleased with myself. \u00a0Turns out, a 40 minute connection isn&#8217;t nearly enough time to transfer in Frankfurt (Franport, as they call it). \u00a0The lady at the United desk told us that you need at least 1.5 hours. \u00a0I think the United computer program needs some work since it suggested the itinerary! \u00a0Anyway, as Bryon mentioned, she was able to get us on a direct flight to Dubrovnik so it worked out (though we arrived several hours later and even more sleep deprived. \u00a0side note: if you can find 4 chairs together, the terminal chairs at Frankfurt make for a decent nap even though they don&#8217;t look that comfortable). \u00a0The descent into Dubrovnik is breathtaking, and I think makes this flight worth the effort. \u00a0It&#8217;s in fact the most beautiful descent I have ever seen. \u00a0We were fortunate to be sitting on the left side with all of the spectacular views (YMMV). \u00a0I would have taken a picture like the passenger in front of me, but I generally follow the no electronics rules.<\/p>\n<p>After we arrived at our sobe (room), we collapsed from exhaustion until the following morning.<\/p>\n<p>In the morning, we took the bus to try to get to Ploce Gate (Rick Steves&#8217; suggested starting point for walking around the wall). \u00a0Dubrovnik is a small Medieval town surrounded by a castle wall. \u00a0According to Wikipedia, &#8220;It is a testament to the resilience of the ancient walls that more buildings in the old town were not destroyed during the bombardment (during the 1991 Siege of Dubrovnik); the ancient walls in fact were more effective at resisting modern weaponry than contemporary structures in the city&#8217;s periphery&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>We also took a cable car up Mt Srd to get a better view<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valeriechang.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SAM_0080.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36\" alt=\"Dubrovnik's Walls\" src=\"http:\/\/valeriechang.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SAM_0080-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/valeriechang.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SAM_0080-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/valeriechang.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SAM_0080-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/valeriechang.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SAM_0080-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-36\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dubrovnik&#8217;s Walls from the cable car<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_37\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/valeriechang.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/SAM_0081.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37\" alt=\"View from Mt.
